Cold but Beautiful
An austerely beautiful autumn day today - a chill northerly wind only partially counteracted by a bright sun. The red kites that live along the M40 were particularly noticeable, about 20 of them massing over some trees about six miles north west of High Wycombe - they made a beautiful sight.

The Art of Photography Defined
"As for [Henri Cartier Bresson], I think that any art where there is a single obvious meaning is a failure except in advertising and propaganda.... The perfect photograph should hurt to look at, but be compelling enough that you can't look away."
These comments are by a guy called Hugh Crawford and are from a thread on The Online Photographer and for me sum up what I think Art, and photography, are largely about, albeit that I would replace "hurt" with "invoke melancholy". Why melancholy? Because the most beautiful things in life (and Art should, I think, be about beauty) contain elements, however small, that are indicative of their own decay. It is why great Art cannot be appreciated at its greatest at the moment of its conception.

More Mac Awfulness
Interesting. Now that I have a Mac, I find that I hate Quicktime even more than I did previously. It really is like something out of the stone age, slow and arrogant and awful.
On the other hand, I will admit, without let or hindrance, that I like the touchpad on my Mac - it comes naturally now for me to use one, two, three or four finger gestures that mean moving through a workflow, for example using Nikon Capture NX, is faster and more satisfying than it could ever be with a mouse.

More Mac Misery
Highlight, cut and paste? Well, yes, most of the time. But then suddenly, with no reason at all, you can't. You can highlight all you like but copy? Cut? Nah, not this time matey - anyone would think you wanted reliability!

Why Macs Suck post no. 812
1. Along with all the other annoying things about Macs, why can't you copy and paste to and from the fancy looking but non-functioning address book piece o' crap that comes bundled on your "it just works"TM Mac?

Some Recent Shots
Wahey, I've discovered a little programme designed to quickly and easily resize images on my Mac (one area where the PC wins hands down - Powertools, Resizer, install, right click, resize.... no faffing needed) - thanks to nplima (Nuno - Nuno Lima?) on macrumours for leading me to smallimage. I've not correctly installed it on my machine yet but I'm getting there. Anyway, some examples:

Daily M**l Readers in Public
Whoops, back again - couldn't resist it (and things going a bit slowly over on 5000k - no offence Alan, I know you are busy). Anyway, from a comment regarding the Daily Mail, Britain's most hateful paper (and that is saying a lot):
"I don't know what it is about Mail readers, but they always annoy me more than any other people reading papers in public. All those middle-aged, puffy-faced women, soaking up the hatred on the northern line, as they read about the latest manufactured moral panic - it's a bit like watching someone shooting up smack in the seat next to you."
A perfect description of how they make me feel.

Welcome to Mrs Lemon's
It started as a project to take a picture a day for 10 years. This hasn't, I must belatedly admit, happened. However, I have posted pics relatively frequently and I like to think my technique has improved. So, help yourselves - all feedback is welcome be it good, bad or indifferent. Copy and use any pictures as you see fit, though beware that these are all low-res copies (and similar can be found on Flickr) - nowadays I shoot in RAW and keep the larger files this generates on my PC. The pictures on here are, for the most part, a bit murky and soft, a product of their size I think. But, if you were interested in prints / use of larger, better quality images, you can contact me at patrick dodds @ gmail dot com without the spaces.
