Beauty, authenticity and ambiguity: what you need for universality and, therefore, in combination with an original (in the sense of unique, and in the sense of aetiology) idea, for art. Is it possible to have these in a photograph? To a limited degree, yes. And I don't mean "limited" in a pejorative sense: all forms of expression are limited. A picture does better with ambiguity than a play, for example. But a picture doesn't do as well as a play when it comes to the expression of an idea.
